A Journey Through Book Making

We had a wonderful talk today by one of our members - Jackie M who makes stunning fabric books. She brought lots of her wonderful pieces to show us. She has been asked before 'why do you do it?' to which she always replies 'because I want to'. Making the books gives her pleasure and we were privileged to have a look into her book making world today.

She started following a challenge from her good friend Pauline when a member of Bolton EG; the challenge was around inches and Jackie ended up with a huge pile - some hers, some foremother people and she wanted a good way to store and display them and so her book making journey began. Many of her books have been produced following further Pauline challenges and Jackie likes to have a theme for the books. They vary in size and cover a wide range of themes - some given and some personal to Jackie such as family birthdays.

She has developed her method by trial and error and generously shared her process with us and construction tips. The books are predominantly based on pelmet vilene with a backing fabric, then appliqué and stitch forms the theme. Jackie acquired an old typewriter and loves to add text to her pieces with it - it was a birthday present. She also collects little bits and bobs - old bits of broken watches, silicone rings, charms - anything that can be added to her pages.

Here's just a small sample of her work. Enjoy!

Also today, Serena brought some prints of her contribution to the Toni Buckby project at Sheffield University.
The project was part of Toni's PhD on the blackwork embroidery collection at the V&A. The work Serena did was based on a coif.

November Meeting and Textilia III

It was great to see everyone yesterday and we welcomed some new members too!

Several of our members belong to Textilia III and we were joined today by Catherine Slater another Textilia member. Textilia III is a Yorkshire based textile group formed in 1995 following founder members' participation in City & Guilds. What was really interesting to hear about was their 'Group Critique'. We all get stuck sometimes and having a critical friend can really help. It sounds a bit daunting but as it was explained to us what emerged was a supportive commentary that members received.

Textilia have had project running over lockdown, similar to our 4" squares but a little more challenging than a monthly colour theme. They had 3 jars, one with a selection of techniques on slips of paper,

one with colours and one with
prompts/themes. A random slip is taken from each jar and that becomes the prompt. Some were a little easier to make than others but they were all lovely. It's a great idea!

Members have all been busy, not least Jackie who has produced yet another lovely book.

Reasons to buy fabric 5 AND threads!

So, I'm not a sun worshipper, it's been way too hot for my liking I have to say, although not too hot for stitching. My friends from the group think I'm a bad influence because I keep tempting them with the threads I've been buying - it's the heat - that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.😂

I'm a little bit addicted to Paint-Box Threads and got a bit carried away (not for the first time!):

These are lovely hand-dyed cotton threads and I've been putting them to good use. Have a look at the website [link above] and see if you can resist temptation.
Cathy Really has started posting YouTube videos for the new Bug  Box stitch along; two bugs so far...

Members have been catching up with the 52 tags challenge and our monthly square and I have finished one of my mini books which was lurking under a pile of unfinished things.
We're also at Yarndale this year [keeping everything crossed Covid doesn't interfere] and so we're busy making plans for that; it's involved me rummaging around in the roof looking for things which were 'tidied' and has proved to be a very hot job - I feel some restorative thread shopping coming on...

Here's a photo catch up.

Bit of crochet while watching the Olympics by Judith, who has just joined our WhatsApp chat - what a boon thats been over lockdown.
