The Great Tapestry of Scotland

Today we were joined by Susie Finlayson who gave us an absolutely fascinating talk about the Great Tapestry of Scotland. What a wonderful project it is and a couple of members who have actually been to visit it in Galashiels can testify to how brilliant it is. I say tapestry, but as we know it's an embroidery but has been called a tapestry in the tradition of the Bayeux, Stamford and Quaker pieces.

The idea for the tapestry came from Alexander McCall Smith after he visited the Prestonpans tapestry (there seems to be a lot of embroidery-tapestries about!); he asked Andrew Crummy to design it and Alistair Moffat had the task of deciding which events in Scotland's history to include. The resulting tapestry is a very impressive 140m long x 1m wide and consists of 165 panels - that's four times the size of the Bayeux. The tapestry reflects not just the lives of the rich and famous, the kings and queens, but the ordinary people of Scotland too.

Stitchers from all over Scotland took part in embroidering the panels, all coordinated by Dorie Wilkie who led the stitching on the Prestonpans tapestry. Susie became involved at the beginning of the project and was initially not a stitcher but has become a very accomplished one! The original designs for panels were traced onto linen union fabric and then with minimal instructions or rules sent off to various groups round Scotland to be completed. Stitches and colours were pretty much left to the groups and they all added in their own personal stories and tags resulting in a rich and varied collection of panels. Officially the panels cover from the ice age to 1999 with the reformation of the Scottish Parliament, although extra bits have been incorporated in the Welcome Panel. The Welcome Panel is the first to greet you as you enter the purpose built centre where the tapestry is displayed. Galashiels was chosen as the permanent home for its accessibility while not being Edinburgh or Glasgow. A further panel - the Interchange Panel was commissioned by the Borders Railway Community Partnership and is being worked on at the moment; in fact this is the piece that Susie brought to our meeting and that we had the privilege of stitching parts of. Even Queen Camilla has added stitches to it, so we are in good company! Those of us who added to the panel signed Susie's record book - again including HRH!

We had a really great day with Susie and her anecdotes about the project were wonderful. We just need a trip north of the border to see the whole thing now.

Brownies and Butterflies

Claire, Dee, Sue and Pauline have spent time with Skipton Methodist Brownies working on a little project. The Brownies have been designing butterflies, stitching them and turning them into cards. Here are the lovely results with some of the design process.

Sheep Day

The return of Sheep Day in Skipton! It was great to see the High Street full of visitors again on Sunday for Sheep Day. Claire and I were early starters putting our stall up; we had fun and games with the wind which had the potential to turn us into Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. We managed to baton ourselves down eventually with the help of Jackie on the Yarndale stand and marshals who found us some extra guylines. We had our rainbow squares on display and our final of batch of Morsbags to give away together with some fabric inspiration packs to sell. It was lovely to chat to people again and we met some potential new members which was great.

A BIG Thank You

This is a bit of a summary of the year - I know it's not the end of the year but it seems an appropriate time to say thank you as it's a year since the Instagram account started and it's had a lot of support.

Our stitch group has been on the go for a long time - originally as Skipton Branch of the Embroiderer's Guild and now as Skipton Stitchers - bit of a challenge sorting that one out during lockdown! Despite the last year and a bit being scuppered by Covid, in many ways it has been really heartening to see the way the stitch community has shared and supported each other.

We've had Zoom meetings (involved some rolling eyes at uncooperative technology) and new WhatsApp chats which have kept people in touch. Online workshops have been a godsend and there have been outdoor get togethers when permitted. It's so nice to be back to 'normal' meetings, if not quite as normal as before! I seem to have spent an awful lot of time on my laptop and setting up our Instagram account has kept me particularly busy - gathering photos from members and keeping track of what I have and haven't done 😂.

We have a new Programme Secretary - thanks to Sue for volunteering for that one! We have an interesting year ahead of us with outside speakers and workshops; we decided to utilise members' skills more and increase the number of member led workshops - we're a talented bunch and want to celebrate that.

We had a really successful Yarndale and Exhibition - thanks to all who set up, organised, contributed or visited; we're also preparing for another exhibition, hopefully October next year.

So, in celebration of the past year's successes, despite Covid, here's some fireworks! (tag 45 #52tagshannemade)
